419 Antique 1/2
Nineteenth century half size violin, unlabelled. Probably French, but possibly German or English, this is a truly exceptional little instrument. It has clearly been made by a single luthier - not a workshop instrument - using the finest of woods and the utmost of care. Length of Back is 31cm, over 12 inches, but it is a narrow, delicate instrument which gives the impression that it is smaller than it is. There is nothing small or narrow about the sound, however, which is strong and rich, amazing for such a small fiddle. A talented young player will adore this, and will go a long way with it.
Condition: There is an old repair on one rib, visible in the side-on photo. Stable and solid. The fingerboard has been narrowed at the top nut, making the neck very fine - one for small fingers! Lots and lots of dings and scratches, but no serious issues.
Set-up: New rosewood pegs, new soundpost and Aubert bridge, new Tonica strings and Wittner tailpiece.
Price, including a new case and bow: €800
