513 Nicolas Bertholini
Early to mid-20th century French violin, labelled Nicolas Bertholini etc. Good Mirecourt workshop instrument, from the higher end of the range, made with good, tight-grained spruce and strongly flamed maple. Nice, deep red varnish and quality workmanship. Sound is bright and clear with great projection, will ring out in any session.
Condition: Very clean - the lines on the front that can be seen in the photo are natural spalting lines in the wood. The fiddles has one repaired wing crack and some blemishes to the varnish on the back, which look as though they happened at the time of making, before the varnish was dry. None of these affect the tone or the integrity of the instrument, which is in sound, robust condition.
Set-up: New rosewood pegs and matching chin rest, new sound post and Aubert bridge, new Wittner tailpiece and Helicore strings.
