688 3/4 Maidstone
Late 19th Century German violin, three-quarter size, unlabelled but bearing all the hallmarks of Maidstone violins, which were among the earliest mass-manufactured instruments to be imported into the UK and Ireland. They are sturdy and reliable instruments, particularly suited to younger students; the number that have survived intact is proof of this. The red-brown varnish is distinctive, but in other ways the instruments vary quite widely. This one has a plain back and wide-grained top. Their sound varies greatly, but this one is exceptionally good, warm and rich and sweet, and exceptionally easy to play. A lovely fiddle for a keen youngster.
Condition: Plenty of bumps and scratches and dings, but no cracks, repairs or other issues.
