Early 20th Century violin labelled 'Paul Bailly Luthier 1906 etc' and signed across the label. I have to confess ignorance. In my opinion this is a French instrument and of the age it claims to be. The label shows no sign of being a later addition. However, I don't have the experience to guarantee it is a Bailly workshop violin. It has a two-piece flamed maple back, and red-gold varnish over a yellow ground. One puzzling aspect of the instrument is the presence of ebony studs in all four corners and beside the neck, whereas they are normally only found on the back in the top and bottom blocks. Strong, clear sound, extremely even across the strings, and with some lovely bell-like harmonics. A lovely violin. Condition: Some varnish wear on the back and the right shoulder - quite attractive. A lot of very light dings, but no chips or cracks. On the whole, in very good condition. Set up with original dark rosewood pegs, Helicore strings and Wittner tailpiece. Price. €1400
